Response

I think seeking the common good for your self, and for others is ideal. To serve others best and to bring yourself to completion, it's important to respond to God's calling for you. Not in a utilitarian way neccesarily.

I say "both" as opposed to one or the other.

  1. Tocqueville said that altruism in America is unique in that it is based on "self-interest rightly understood." That is, we understand that by helping others we are really helping ourselves in the long run. I'm not convinced that most of us are wise enough, or cynical enough, to employ this reasoning as our primary motivation for acts of charity and virtue. But I think he's right, as are you Danny, that common good and individual good are usually more or less aligned.
